“I am a Cork boy and I’m a mammy’s boy,” admits the 38-year-old, who grew up in Ballyhooly Road and left Ireland in 2018, travelled to Dublin, to South-East Asia and Australia, and ended up in Vancouver.
On his journey, he picked up some great skills regarding mindset and personal transformation, and wants to implement them in Cork as part of his new business venture.
“My partner Charlotte and I lived in Vancouver for five years,” says Peter.
“We’re back here to establish our practice and to send out a beacon of hope to those who are suffering physical and emotional pain.”
There’s another reason the couple want to re-locate to Cork.
“We’re hoping to start a family,” says Peter.
How did he start his journey exploring physical wellness and emotional wellness?
“Charlotte, who I met in Dublin and who is French, suffered chronic pain for seven years,” he explains.
“It was a massive strain on both of us. And it was demoralising for me that I couldn’t help her.”
A licensed Physical Therapist, Peter knew there was something missing in his practice.
“I said, let’s travel for six months and explore different forms of therapy and see where it takes us.”
Where did it take them?
“Dr Shane Murnaghan, who is based in Dublin, introduced us to the world of neuroplasticity,” says Peter.
“He opened up a whole new world for us.
“Neuroplasticity is the pyscho-emotional aspect of chronic pain and trauma.
“In Canada, I did Dr Mate Gabor’s Compassion Inquiry programme and that’s what I’m all about now. It is so powerful, so beautiful, and anyone can apply it and overcome anything they are experiencing.”
Neuroplasticity, also known as neural plasticity or brain plasticity, is the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganisation. It occurs when the brain is rewired to function some way that differs from how it previously functioned.
“Doing the work, using breath work, pain reprocessing can be challenging,” says Peter. “But in my experience, it works.”
What was his experience?
“I first applied these therapies to a client who had suffered for 15 years,” says Peter.
“She suffered 15 years of chronic back pain and digestive problems. For years, she had no choice but to go into the emergency department of the hospital several times a week to be told they didn’t know what was causing the problems.
“She was given sleeping pills, anti-inflammatories and pain meds. In just five months of applying my therapies, she was pain-free.
“She said, ‘At the end of every session, I’ve never felt so alive’. I was energetically vibrating because I realised that we all have the ability to overcome our biggest struggles and pains.”
Is Charlotte now pain-free?
“Yes, she is,” says Peter. “It was a long slog changing the mindset and building up tolerance to deal with pain.
“I applied the last cutting-edge therapies pioneered by Dr Mate Gabor, Dr John E. Sarno and Dr Joe Dispenza, and Professor Alan Gordon. I gained my qualifications in Canada.”
Peter has now branched into the world of neuroscience and psychology, and works exclusively with chronic pain sufferers, ranging from fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, IBS, headaches, and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, as well as those suffering from emotional trauma.
Peter shares his craft at the Marina Market in Cork city with his ‘Rewilding’ workshop operating next to the newly built Wildwood Sauna just behind the market.
“Extreme breathing techniques, saunas and freezing cold baths can ‘rewild’ the mind and soul to prepare you for any ordeal,” says Peter.
So, for anyone facing an interview, or planning giving a speech in public, or going through mental anguish ahead of (or after) an important sports match; this should help?
“Absolutely,” says Peter.
“The first step is Holotropic Breathwork, which is an intense method of circular breathing that will open up your lungs and let you unravel all of the stress that’s built up inside you. It can be quite emotional.”
Can it be quite uncomfortable?
“Not at all,” says Peter. “Once you’re puffed out, it’s time for a quick meditation session, followed by a trip to the brand-new mini sauna provided by Wildwood Saunas, then cooling off in the icy plunge pool.”
The thought of the icy plunge pool sends shivers down my spine.
“Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!” says Peter, laughing.
A ‘Psychosomatic Hacker,’ he is on a mission.
“I’m dedicated to helping those who are suffering most in society,” says Peter.
“There is a paradox to healing. If you understand this paradox, it will shift your perception and attitude to whatever physical or emotional pain you have.
“Healing is much simpler than you think. But emotionally it will be the most challenging thing you will ever do. But that’s what it takes to live the life you want!”
Peter believes: “Healing is 100% possible for everyone, and that if you think otherwise, it just means that there is a core-based belief deep within you that feels that it’s ‘safer’ to remain in a state of suffering rather than to explore, understand, and process it.”
He offers two treatment programmes, REWIRE: The Nervous System Reset, and PRT, Chronic Pain Remedy.
He provides private treatments and also facilitates Rewilding workshops, offering breathwork and other healing practices.
Peter recently teamed up with John Barry from Wildwood Saunas to conduct sessions.
Surely Peter doesn’t have any trauma in his life?
“Wrong! I always thought I loved myself and I had no problems. I discovered I was wrong,” he says.
“Suffering is relative. It is the human experience. I was curious enough to look inside myself and reflect and reset. It was a beautiful experience.”
